Now I am thinking of the silk scarf. It is, afterall, 75 degrees here this week. In the morning I can get away with wrapping a gauzy number around my neck, but by early afternoon it feels like a self-induced sauna. I know, to have such problems. I am working on embracing this temperate challenge to open my mind to different forms of expression (in fashion).

Love the ikat. Again, statement look (note the buildings = NYC). I admire it but I would look like I used a scarf instead of a towel that morning...and forgot. Don't be afraid to try new things...but know your limits.

Today in celebration of the Chinese New Year I will be donning one (or two...or all three?) of my Kenneth Jay Lane Dragon bracelets! Aren't they gorgeous? Even the fangs are hand-painted with white enamel. Can you get over it?

A Statement on The Winter Fashion Rut

I am in a fashion rut*. When this happens I need to remind myself to seek out the help of those streetwise fashionistas being photographed around the globe. It's true my current professional lifestyle does not require such eloquent dressing, but I can still make a statement with one giant necklace. It's unavoidable to the eye and in my experience immediately lifts the spirits (while hopefully not weighing you down, some are so heavy!).

Enjoy the necklace inspiration below. Remember (to myself and others) that the corresponding outfit need not be complicated; a simple grey t-shirt and white jeans will do*.

(*I am in a late-Spring-like climate and yet it is January and natives all around me seem to be wearing winter gear. But it's 73 and sunny outside. Oh the difficult dilemmas I have to sort out, I know.)

I have always admired fishing flies - bold colors! texture! creativity!

Throughout my life I have pondered collecting them while examining my grandfather's fishing hat or flipping through the Fall Orvis catalog. At flea markets they are gorgeous and beckoning (now I know why the fish bite), if only they weren't sharp to the touch and otherwise useless in my daily life. Until now!

Genius and gorgeous - a large chandelier in this vintage birdcage.
Enormous warehouse doors open this indoor-outdoor showroom to larger-than-life displays. This store makes Anthropogie look amateur. Incredible.

Dying. For. This. A Happy Birthday tiara. It's vintage. I LOVE. A mere $48.

Gorgeous display of German glass glitter. Shakers ranging from $6-20. This is the good glitter people. You know the stuff that makes disco balls look dull.

Entrance to the outdoor space - incredible cement garden finds as well as plenty of vintage furniture.

Shell cake. Whomever has this space is seriously gifted with shells, and has incredible amounts of patience. This shell cake is stunning. A gorgeous gift for the seaside bride or bridal store.

I am a sucker for vintage iron lawn furniture. I grew up with it (and complained about it since it was not "new" and
cushy or neon in the 80s) but now I have a real appreciation for these pieces. They are used beautifully at the Parker in Palm Springs and look incredible around a croquet lawn. Hello! This settee above is perfection.

Trust me this vintage shopping adventure is worth the trip if you find yourself floating around SoCal. I have already been there twice in 24 hours buying an incredible marble cheese cloche for $8 and a stunning black and white marble cafe table with an iron base for a steal.

It seems kind of a challenge for me to know what to buy for a man. What is a man gift? Considering my taste and tendency to lean strongly towards items I prefer, it can be a challenge to edit my choices according to someone else's wants... Last but not least, a gift of some time on the beach would be a nice present. See even this bull likes the beach. Doesn't he look relaxed? I can sense it in his blank stare. Very zen moment.

Nature vs. Nurture

I have never been the garden girl. I appreciate a good garden and I adore flowers. But gardening has never been my thing. Maybe it's the dirt or the fact that I can kill every green thing that moves into or adjacent to my house. I think I just want to show up and have it all blooming and perfect kind of like I live at the botanical gardens.

These little spots below are divine. I could see myself enjoying the butterflies and whatnot there.

Those adirondacks are perfection. Don't they just melt away your cares by looking at them?

I love Zinnias. They are amazing. Love. Sunflowers are great for about a day until their heads get so big they cannot stand it anymore. I love a playhouse in the garden. My friend Melissa had one growing up, and I thought it was pretty normal to have a little house in the garden that was all yours. That was really NICE and I wish I had an adult garden house now. Maybe once we plant some roots...(SSM will be tending those due to my inability to get any root-bearing thing to thrive.)

It would be wonderful to face the week head on with a dramatic uniform like those shown below. Alas, it is not comfortable to sit for hours bent over bits of jewelry while wearing sequins (it's been tried). I will focus on conjugating happy clothes to face the imminent week.

Stacked

My mother wore bracelets when I was a kid, specific ones everyday. I would hear them cling together when I would misplace her in a store and she was easily found.

Suffice it to say I have enjoyed bracelets since I was a child. I required more and more rubber bracelets, made heaps of friendship bracelets and collected stretchy plastic neon hearts to wear with my swatch watches (multiples please). As a "rebellious" teen I graduated to chains and broken rhinestone necklaces safety-pinned around my arms. Now when the mood strikes me I will choose to stack studded wraps, blingy baubles, gold chains, and animals.

The message is that this is a very personal way to wear jewelry, an easy way to mix and match and get away with some combinations that mean something to only you. It's about the only jewelry you can wear multiples of and get away without looking gaudy or amateur. I know where I got every piece that I wear and what each one means to me. I hope these photos below inspire your interest and your aesthetic in stacking an arm load of bracelets.

Right to Bare Arms

My obsessions tend to overlap. It's the same skip in my style record that reminds me to indulge my neuroses and buy lots of stripes, grey sweaters, boots, and several fur vests.

I am sure I have rambled on about the virtues of the vest on this blog before. All I can hope for is that you either haven't heard my rant about vests yet, or that at least these photos (below) are new to your eyes.

The vest is one of the most versatile pieces you can own (provided you live in a climate that supports versatility...if not, create your own climate indoors that supports vest versatility). What a layering piece! It looks incredible over, under, over and under, inbetween, draped over, inside, and nearly solo. The bottom line is that the fur vest is chic. And it keeps your arms free for other needs. The fur vest keeps your heart warm, and warms your heart. Awwww.

Excellent use as an accent of color and texture to this parka look.

Ooh, Tibetan curly lamb. Love. So soft. I have one in black, it's longer, and I sort of look like a giant muppet in it. But that does not make it less amazing.

Black fur vest with bare legs, attitude not included (but enhanced by the cigarette smoking).

Fuzzy fur with sleek leather. In Paris of course. Where you can get away with almost any sartorial concoction provided you are within the city. If foreign you may need to legitimize your style choices with le smoking. Not that I am condoning that habit, I am just pointing out that it seems to be thematic. And allowed.

Big vest, chubby vest, tall vest, stripey vest. A vest for all!

Ms. Moss wearing lovely gilet and looking perfectly styled. Although I am sure she threw this on at the last second because of a chill or something. (more on Kate in a later post. stay tuned)

Olivia Palermo in a great fur vest, just the right length, color, etc. Again the owner of another well-curated wardrobe.

Deer Season

'Tis the season to don your apparel. Except that this deer sweatshirt (am I right, that is a screenprinted sweatshirt?) is part of the whole kitch fashion rugged fall throwback into the woods ironic to be wearing it to fashion week thing.

I am not a "hater". I like this (I could do without it being a "sweatshirt" though). And I like animals. As a matter of fact I have recently been donning my deer Cowichan sweater all over SoCal. Possibly in an effort to feel something like Fall as I understand it.

I haven't written in a while, and I connected to this streetwear picture. I thought I would share. Although my recommendation is that you set forth to ferret out a vintage piece of woodsy animalia instead of mucking over to your local Outfitters (if you know what I mean, wink wink nudge nudge).

The Lost Art

I still write things down. I love to write and use my penmanship (although it can swing from swoopy and pretty to socially disturbed). My friend Kurt gave me an excellent book on handwriting analysis years ago. Maybe that's why people don't hand write me anymore?

How I (want to) Roll

Since most of my travel is limited to domestic flights where I check a piece of mediocre luggage (hello, I overpack and will not drag that puffed out piece through security) I do not have the need to own bespoke luggage such as Globetrotter, LV, or Goyard.

Typing those words makes me wish for a time when train cars were boarded with trunks and assorted monogrammed pieces. If Amtrak wasn't so dodgy between major cities I might consider donning a caftan and wafting from platform to platform followed by a uniformed steward pushing a cart piled with my must-haves for the next region... We have a thing for trains in my family, but I have to say these days it doesn't go much past underground commuter railcars and freight.

Since the next best thing to the Orient Express is private jet travel I must highlight the deserving luggage that has earned some time aboard a private people mover via sky, rail, or road. They also make chic side tables...

Globetrotter, in orange. Monogrammed of course. The Crew and Globetrotter are in cahoots, but I am not sure about the monogramming status of a Crew purchased piece since I have not gotten that far in my "matched amazing luggage" Life Plan. Yet.

Do I even need to remark on this? Union Jack interior. Ooooooh. Globetrotter likes to team up with designers to do chic linings.

Darjeeling Limited custom luggage a la Louis Vuitton. Quilted interior? Amaze. My things would look so much prettier if they were tucked gently into this piece of incredible usable artistry...

The Darjeeling Limited Collection...numbered and monogrammed. Of course the most important part, please admire the running safari animals. GENIUS. It was my favorite thing about the movie. Most props/styling are my favorite things about a movie; and leave it to Wes Anderson to reel me in with some MJ collaboration.

Proper Picnic

I love bringing the indoors out. There is something so luxurious about an Oriental rug on a lawn or a lamp illuminating the evening on a backyard buffet.

Now said, the reason I was attracted to the image below is obvious: dining room scene in lush outdoor space. Chic. But we also must visit the well done print-mixing which makes the rather cliche red-white-blue theme rather refreshing. What cannot go overlooked, however, are the incredible navy and white gingham dining chairs. An ingenious use of a favorite (and in this case ironic) picnic print.

The Ol' Switcharoo

A few days ago I was in my native Northeastern Ohio basking in the September light and enjoying the heavy grey clouds that define the essential Fall Sky. While shopping for some warm-weather-fall-clothing with my Mother (she retreats south of the Mason-Dixon line while I headed back across the Mississippi) I heard a woman ask her friend: "have you switched over yet?". Sadly, I have not, and will not for some time unless some Fall crispiness arrives in this Southern latitude for a cameo. (It does get chilly at night which gives me hope for a nice boot parade on occasion.)

This "switch over" topic seemed to occupy a lot of my conversation when I lived back East. I remember those Indian Summer days that caused us to ask: "is it too late for a sandal?". Inevitably the weather would turn brisk fifteen minutes later answering our question.

Whether you are "switching over" to darker colored linen and adding a scarf to your favorite t-shirt - or pulling out all of the windproof gear and collecting new tights - cheers to Fall! A seasonal wardrobe marker in the passage of time and an homage to all things knitted, furry, lined, cozy, and suede. Yum.

Another Perfect Place

I have never been to this exact beach cottage below. What it represents is the perfect culmination of all of the gorgeous, comfy, backwoods, run-down, and essential cottages and cabins that I have been in during the summers of my life. This being the last official weekend of summer, I thought I should share these photos.

The place in time and space featured below is, in my mind, complete bliss. I want to incorporate elements of this cottage living into every aspect of my life.

Can one get away with so many patterns and colors in anything other than a home that is used for relaxation? The answer is yes. If it is on the water, or if you are dedicated to owning this complete look and making it work.

Even the fish have a chic shack for their enjoyment (and everyone else's).

I could spend the rest of my life at the end of this dock (with a few choice people, a steady stream of magazines and sweaters, and don't forget the iced tea).

The lanterns, the yard. This is how to use a tree and a lawn properly.

I mean they have teepees. There are teepees there. I want this place.

Of course their beehives are striped. Aren't they all? This is BRILLIANT and gorgeous. And of course it makes me want a beehive.

Incredible bunk room. If you recall from a previous post my love of a decent bunk room. Well this goes beyond. And it makes me want to have a bunk room in my house. That's it, the guest room is going to be a bunk room.
Note the Hudson Bay blankets (never ever get these wet or think you can take them to the beach for a bonfire - they are sand sponges...).

Do I even need to address this embroidery? Love.

I started learning to speak French when I was ten; when I went on to college I did not have to speak en Francais to my friends. The language abandoned me, and I abandoned French. And until recently I was kind of upset with the French. I was non-plussed about the entire anti-American vibe that tends to eminate from le Francais when they are commenting on world politics. The thing is, the glorious US of A has the best of all worlds (with some exceptions, and my overt confidence spoken like a true American), therefore some nationalities may want to comment in the negative. I realized that my being irked with stereotyping the French was the same thing they were allegedly thinking about me, or my countrymen and political representatives at least. Therefore, I let it go (and started reading French magazines again to reaquaint myself with their entire culture sans over ripe fromage). Mostly I let it go because it is hard to argue that these people do not have a sense of style. So I am back on with the French, as you already know from my gushing posts about how incredibly French women dress and on and on. This seems like a Sunday Thought to me, so I will end it there and leave you with a few pleasing images...

I love a graphic and retro looking anything. The font is also tres chic. Although I feel to be completely stereotypical, this guy needs a moustache. With a slight curl on the end.

Back to the matter at hand: learning from street style, namely that of Paris.

I am obsessed with scarves. I think they are good for anything, and nearly any weather (except the current 90 degree temps we are enduring here in Southern California, therefore my scarves wait patiently). I think a scarf adds an instant bit of interest to any ensemble. Have a look below and see how these women wrap and fold their accessories. P.S. They are incredible little blankets on airplanes, a must have when flying.

The asymmetrical oversized square scarf wrap. Sometimes a square scarf is a challenge, but this girl has it down. I am taking notes.

The massive scarf. I love this look. It is a bit extreme and takes a sleek ensemble to pull it off without looking like a remnant bin. Giant Scarf look can also be achieved by daring to wear two scarves at once. A look my friend AHN pulls off flawlessly.

Basic How to Wear a Scarf looks. Hair up or down, look simple or colorful. These are all appropriate and add dimension and texture.

And finally, here's the funnelneck coat you need when you don't have a scarf. this thing is AMAZING. I love the color grey, natural leather buckles, and of course the dramatic neck. I love a rather existentialist dramatic graphic look. I love it. I am jealous and want to be in the weather wearing this coat.

La Petite Fille (The Little Girl)

As you may know, dear friend, I am slightly obsessed with "street fashion". It is inspiring to see how others use basic pieces the way artists like Van Gogh or Dali used the same medium.

In the coming days I will share favorite street fashion, and some of the best comes from New York and of course Paris. There is something about French style that all has the same je ne sais quoi; it's borderline conformist but at the same time reeks of searing individuality. Maybe because French women are prone to embracing who they truly are instead of vying for the biggest hair, longest nails, or highest heels. These women smoke if they want to, drink champagne as they see fit, and embrace their real bodies - all the while smearing more brie on those perfect baguettes.

The Dark'n'Stormy
Staying on theme with my desire for some weather, I figured I would highlight one more thing Southern California seems to lack: my favorite cocktail. The first time that sweet nectar touched my lips was out of a silver trophy cup at the IYAC in Newport the night our team won the Raingutter Regatta.
Born in Bermuda (who knows when) at the Royal Naval Officer's Club when they discovered that a floater of black rum made their ginger beer taste so much better. Legend has it the name was inspired by a comment from a patron saying that the black rum floater looked like a thundercloud in the glass the "color of a cloud that only a fool or a dead man would sail under". Too many of these thunderclouds sure makes you feel like a dead man (woman) walking the next day...
Made with Goslings Dark Rum (2 oz, floater), Barritts Ginger Beer (4 oz.), and a slice of lime it is perhaps one of the tastiest and most dangerous cocktails. It's appropriate served seaside, or puddle-side if you can't find a body of water but need a Dark-n-Stormy. Please keep up the count and have one for me (or a few) until I can get back across the Mississippi River to the Atlantic side.

The best, and only proper Ginger Beer for the Dark-n-Stormy.
Also the color of the can is BRILLIANT. I want to use this color in a lavatory or dining room. Ooh a dining room with chocolate brown and off-white graphic drapes...

The other key ingredient. Delicious Gosling's Black Rum.
(They have their own Ginger Beer Brand, now too, but I am a bit of a Dark-n-Stormy snob and insist on Barritt's unless I am really desperate in say, Manhattan or California...)

This post is dedicated to Michael Francois O'Neill who was a champion on that Raingutter Team, and whose enjoyment of above mentioned cocktail inspired a message befitting a t-shirt. And also to The Hawk who has shared many of these drinks in fine establishments scattered around our little island.

Gallop, Part Deux

Nothing says Autumn to me like an equestrian throwback. Maybe it's because in the fall when I went back to school we rode horses and got graded on tacking and grooming for P.E. class. (I didn't think it was too fair since some girls seemed to live at the barn and obviously passed this with flying colors.) Or maybe it's simply because nothing says "new season of crisp air and shorter days" like picking apples in your riding boots or meandering to field hockey practice in your J. Crew barn jacket.

Therefore it seems obvious that any horse-related item at this point in August can send me reeling into a spiral of back-to-school ideals. Allow these images (and future ones) to inspire the equestrienne in you, and don't forget to take those boots to the cobbler. It's almost time...

Clouds

You can't have amazing sunsets without clouds. Not possible. I didn't realize that until I moved to San Diego where there is no weather and no clouds. I was perplexed as to why I hadn't seen a good sunset in a while, and one cloudy evening (months ago) I noticed a flaming orange sky. I miss clouds. And thunderstorms. The sky is one of my favorite things. Stars, moon, clouds passing, rain, thunderheads building over open water in the distance. I didn't appreciate my previous skies until I had this cloudless one. I am trying not to complain - it is temperate and sunny here daily! Instead I observe. Just like some wise person said: sometimes you have to endure a little sorrow to know true happiness. Or was it endure rain to see the rainbow? Something like that...

Yes this has been posted here before, but it is just a serene and gorgeous example of the imperfect being PERFECT!

Re-Re-Invention

In the late 1950s Lilly Pulitzer opened a juice stand in Palm Beach. Legend has it that the juice stained her clothes, so she had some cotton block-printed and started making shifts to wear while working at the stand. The trend caught on and the "Lilly" dress was born. In 1959 Mrs. Pulitzer officially founded the clothing company; in 1984 it all ended because Lilly stopped "having fun". Good for her. Go out on a high note.

In 1993 a company called Sugartown, Ltd. wanted to revive the Brand, and that they did with Mrs. P herself at the helm of creativity. Personally I was thrilled when new Lilly appeared in Vero Beach at one of those stuffy little beach shops on Ocean Drive. I bought a skirt: pink and green with butterflies on it and the signature cotton lace decorating the edge. It was a little frumpy, so I had it shortened. The company stuck to it and the Brand boomed in resort towns all over the East Coast. I already had a nice collection of vintage Lilly going, and to that I added the new pieces. Proper patchwork skirts that were stitched together like the good ol' days; wraps that were reversible.

But then something happened. They wore out their welcome getting "too big" and "too accessible". That is not something that flies with that original Lilly crowd. The patchworks even went downhill and were printed fabrics instead of sewn patches! When I saw that violation at Angela Moore in Newport it was the beginning of the end. I have not bought any Lilly since. In fact, I have a large box full of my 60s-70s Lilly and my 1993-2000 Lilly that lies in wait.

I didn't even consider Lilly again until recently. A few years ago Jane Schoenborn of Buzz by Jane Fox, a defunct and quirkly little accessories Brand, took over accessories at Lilly. Jane is now Senior Designer. Snaps to Jane S. because Lilly P. is looking a whole lot better these days. She has really expanded the line and made it less saccharin. Check out the palatable and relevant-to-most-of-our-lifestyles line yourself on their website. In closing, I will share my favorite piece from their line (below). It's probably not something you want wear while squeezing oranges.

As a designer there's no requirement that you be all cashmere and cord in Fall. This piece is from Lilly Pulitzer's Fall Collection. The Eryn Dress. Please note it is striped. At least I am consistent.

I think in images. If you say something to me, my mind immediately builds a little picture of that scenario/idea/item. This can be a good thing, and a bad thing. It has pushed me to edit the types of things I watch, places I go, and things that I read. For example I pretty much avoid the "news" for obvious reasons. It's safe to say I have an active imagination, one that's catalyst is reality turned into my personal conceptions.

For now, this Sunday almost-afternoon, I will share an image to me that is perfection. A perfect blue oxford buttoned on to a beach umbrella - please note the background. Doesn't it just make you relax looking at it? And doesn't it make you want to wear that blue oxford over your bathing suit?

Not a terrible way to market an oxford by the way...

Seasonal Dressing to the Max

This shoot is from Harper's Bazaar Korea; a feature on "getaway chic". I would like to look this chic on my getaway, or everyday. I love the maxi skirt (and dress) right now. For those of you living in a normal climate with proper seasons, there is a way to adapt the maxi into Fall.

Frankly I don't even know if that's a fashion trend right now. I did happen to save my incredible maxi skirts from 1999 that would look incredible with ballet flats and a fitted fisherman's knit sweater for the crispier months (that I will most likely not participate in due to my current latitude). Therefore I will adapt and wear them with leopard print haircalf ballet flats and a wonderfully minimalist grey t-shirt. And maybe a jacket if I am lucky. Til then, enjoy these summer days wherever you are; and prepare for the floating leaves and fun fashion of Fall.

I don't have anything much to write about today, but I thought I would share some inspiring images. I am trying to get my creative juices flowing so that I can create some jewelry pieces for summer-now, fall-soon, and summer-next-year.

I was always obsessed with candy sticks. In hindsight I think I liked the colors and stripes more than the taste. In Ohio these things were ubiquitous. Candy, it's color, design, and texture are all of the reasons I named my jewelry line "Sugar". (I also have a slight obsession with jewelry - candy for adult women)

Suzani Fever

As you may know, I really enjoy graphic prints, texture, and nods to ethnicity. Suzanis seem to capture all of those traits. Suzanis are native to central Asia; for centuries they have been presented to the groom as part of the bride's dowry. They are gorgeous and colorful and range in size and shape.

I first fell in love with them last year in Palm Springs (yes I go on an on about PS, I know). Jonathan Adler uses one draped over a sofa in the lobby at the Parker (see below). Since then I have wondered what they were and how I could get my hands on one (or two or three).

Have a look on Ebay, but make sure you read descriptions and know what size and condition you are buying. They really make a stunning statement in any room as a throw, wall-hanging, as pillows, or even a tablecloth. Have a gander at some inspiring photos below.

J. Crew Do's and Oh-Please-Don'ts...

Let me begin by saying I Heart J. Crew. For as long as I can recall I have dogeared their catalogs starting in the late 80s planning my preppy get ups. I pictured myself in patchwork madras, barn jackets, and my beloved cotton anorak (that I still own bought in 1987) in scenarios all over campus or en route to the beach. J. Crew was my chosen lifestyle brand. I filled in occaisionally with LL Bean packpacks and bluchers, or expensive oversized sweaters from my brother's closet (thanks Mothy). It was almost worth ordering something monthly because every box came with a mini catalog of sale items. Now in Internet Times we don't receive as many catalogs. J Crew decreased sending as many, and they also saw their sales numbers drop. Their key demographic are the generations that dogeared catalogs. It is a nostalgic way for me to plan my J. Crew purchases.

The Crew has been through a lot of growth in the last 25+ years. Some good, some ok, some not-so-ok. I appreciate what they are trying to do. But as a lifelong Crew addict, I also feel free to tsk-tsk their choices having been loyal for a few decades.

I understand the need/want to be edgy and get all kinds of inspiration from street style. But here's the thing, these proportions just don't work, especially in yellow. Wait, is she wearing gloves? And socks? And glasses? And bangles? And messy hair? This is from their Fall Look Book, too. Come on.

It's not all negative. I do have positive things to say, too. I still love the Crew even when they get off track a bit with their styling showing someone in a bathing suit with a suit jacket over it. Two suits do not make a right. (I'm exaggerating, but you have to admit you have seen some edgier-than-needed styling in their catalogs in the last few years.)

Excellent. Classic. I love a tee + average brown belt + amazing maxi sequin skirt. Phenom and far more chic than women spending $10 G's on a Marchesa a la red carpet.

And here are a few bits from their early Fall new arrivals online that I adore. Old style Crew with just the right updates in cut and fabric. Love.

Orange velvet blazer. Amazing. You have to own this look because you will not blend into the background in an orange velvet blazer. On the same note, you cannot wear it with business casual gear, it has to be something opposite like the worn denim. Otherwise you risk a Willy Wonka style that is not interesting.

Leopard print calf hair watch strap. Genius and $18. I have one of these en route. I don't know if I will resurrect my old Timex to put on this band or simply wear the band sans timepiece as a casual bracelet (with gold bracelets also of course).

Leopard print calf hair jacket. $1498. Sold out. Yes, sold out. Already. It is chic. And anyone who has ever bought a vintage fur coat knows that getting them altered is a royal pain - most furriers will not do it - therefore if you want something like this in a modern cut, you have to splurge and buy it when you see it. Otherwise, bask in the light of that 1960s leopard number that you bought for $30 and wear it proudly.

Sure, it was 1000 degrees in the northeast last weekend, but someone was thinking of their fall ensembles to buy out that delicious $1500 jacket. Get on board and start planning. As you know, in mere weeks it will be 55 again and you will be looking high and low for some interesting piece to revive your cold weather wear. Here in southern California I will just stare at my boxes of cold weather gear until I can get East again and delight in some tights and sweaters. At least fur vests and boots are de rigueur around here (even in July).

Alexander Calder has been my favorite artist since I discovered his paintings, and admired his wit. Calder preferred to have a sense of humor about his work. He is credited with inventing the mobile sculpture, but beyond mobiles he created all kinds of pieces. His creative medium was boundless - jewelry, paintings, large scale sculpture, a jet...

Today is Calder's 113th birthday (thanks Google for reminding us). Happy Birthday to someone whose fearlessness in self-expression is still celebrated.

Caftan = a style statement that is confident, casual & glamorous in one fell swoop of a kimono sleeve.

What else could you wear to the beach over your salty tanned skin, and then throw on gold jewelry (stacked in excess) and be the most stylish woman in the room?

A caftan takes confidence. Assurance in yourself that you have the posture to look good in something shapeless (this is why a v-neck caftan is the most flattering). And the presence to walk into a room and be noticed. A caftan is not a subtle statement when worn somewhere beyond a resort or beach club. Be inspired by the looks below. There are a lot of caftans out there whether vintage or new that have heaps of potential...add saltwater and/or gold jewelry at your descretion.

The Best Style from Down Under

Marion Hall Best was an Australian textile merchant and Interior Designer back in the day when the profession was just being born. She had been a student of architecture in Sydney, and in the 1930s took on her first interiors client. Marion Best even took a correspondence course from New York on Interior Design in the late 1930s. Can you imagine?

Her style was bright, mod, bold, and colorblocking...all in my wheelhouse of style. Her innovation and perspective is as fresh today as impactful as it was in the 1940s-1970s. Marion Best Pty. Ltd. the logo and business card are pure genius. Influential, inspirational, dynamic. I love nothing more than an artist or designer that expresses who they are, what they believe, and how they see the world. Marion Hall Best was one of those people, and she left her imprint on design for decades.

I love Palm Springs. It could be the best feature in Southern California.

Last week we spent a little time at the Parker Hotel over there in the desert. Yes, it was about 110 degrees. And as a bonus it was oddly humid and they even had a few thunderstorms while we were there. (I desperately miss thunderstorms by the way!)

Here are a few bits from the Parker. My next post will highlight some of the INCREDIBLE consignment store vintage furniture shopping in Palm Springs. It's the best I have ever seen in quality, selection, design, and price.

One of the guest buildings at the Parker. The landscaping is perfect - overgrown but manicured, flowering, and creates nooks of privacy for every building and lawn area.

It is not news that I love 70s design. Circa 1983 with the arrival of inflatable palm trees I was not too impressed by that "brown and gold decade" (although I still loved disco jams on the radio). Now that I have aged like a fine wine (but not a super fine expensive wine, hello, I am not that aged), and the 70s have settled in like a respectable, dynaimic Tawny Port, I love the complexity and minimalism of 1970s inspired design.

In California there is a lot of residual design from mid-century modern to glitterati Studio 54 glory days. I like that it is present, and accessible. There is so much of it that it is easy to stumble on a property with potential or an Egyptian Revival statue from Palm Springs.

I LOVE Palm Springs. It could be the finest thing about Southern California. I am going there over the holiday, and I will be sure to report back with some of their incredible consignment store finds. Or at least some snaps of hotel interiors.

Luckily my friends are scattered about, and share interesting little tid bits of design with me here and there. I love it. Lately I have been in need of witnessing some of it first hand, in person, beyond a two dimentional surface. Yesterday we went to Santa Monica for a gemstone event, and we rolled down Abbot Kinney as the sun was settling into the late afternoon sky.

The cake plates that Geoffrey usually updates me on, this time shot by yours truly.

What Geoffrey leaves out is that there are two windows full of stacked cake plates - amazing. I am not sure how many of these they move in a month, clearly enough to have in stock but not enough that will hinder their ability to make elaborate cake plate sculptures.

From PLANTATION, a design showroom. Gorgeous work, right up my alley. There is a touch of East Coast classic style in there with a dash of Palm Springs exaggerated whimsy.

Principessa on AK in Venice seems to be a bastion of LA style with flowy dresses, hats, and other pieces you could wear to the beach/stables/hiking/yoga.

An Opinion on LA Style...

LA has some interesting and inspiring expression. The sprawling metropolis adds sundrenched desert and ocean style to the American aesthetic; I appreciate and admire that. Here's my confusion with California in general: it's passive-aggressive as a state. Coming from the East Coast where most things are straight forward (excluding the ever-changing New England weather) - California lacks an opinion. Maybe that is why this state is bankrupt, confused about politics and gay marriage, and unsure of whether or not to fix the highways because, afterall, aren't they just going to need fixing again later?
I think Californians see this lack of opinion as "flexibility" and they tend to express it in their laid back style. How many LA natives did I see yesterday who were dressed for anything? The answer is every woman who wasn't en route to a job waiting tables. It's a look that says: "I could go horseback riding/surfing/to-a-drum-circle-or-yoga-class, but I haven't decided yet".
Maybe on the East Coast we have dressed too detailed for a particular event, take ourselves too seriously, and then discover we have gone swimming in a cocktail dress...

Kate Spade, Revisted

Kate Spade, the person and the brand ambassador, has done a lovely job branding herself into a lifestyle conglomerate. Maybe "conglomerate" is too large of a concept for Kate Spade the brand since I haven't seen preppy printed cereal boxes or coiffed ads for energy drinks donning her signature designs...yet.

Once a cult brand reaches the status of: a) being knocked off and found on NYC street corners due to the art of the "over-logo", b) worshipped by 'tweens, and c) popping off too quirky and/or branded for their own reputations, it is time to move along because the brand appears to be played out. This happened to Kate. It happened to Lilly in 2001 when they decided to open heaps of stores and cover everything in goofy pink flamingos and green palms. I am a sucker for some vintage Lilly, and they have made a nice comeback in the last year or so, but notably have also stopped plastering everything with the word "Lilly". The "over-logo" will drive that base clientele right into obscurity.

The common denominator is that the clientele who helped to launch these brands by their sheer devotion, will also abandon something quickly when they fear it is not exclusive enough. Ralph has survived this somewhat by offering his exclusive Purple Label, opening stores only in chic locations and keeping them impeccably decorated, and of course always offering some bit of the "lifestyle" that is untouchable - like his new "Vault" collection (some of the items are "price upon application", ooooh).

Another thing that works for Kate, Lilly, Ralph, and my friend Camilla (CK Bradley) is that they all have developed a lifestyle brand based on their lifestyles. They were not trying to be anyone else. They have simply offered their concept of how life should be lived to their clientele - mostly those who currently live that lifestyle and recognize it. So you can see where and how some may have gotten off track by getting too big, or over-logoed, or just lost sight of the colors and feeling of an afternoon by the pool followed by a proper cocktail party under the stars...

Take from this what you will. Possibly entertain the idea of branding yourself in order to remain consistent in your aesthetic goals.

If we're talking business though, remember this: lifestyle brand consumers will always want what they cannot have, will spend money to obtain a slice of that feeling/perception/idea, and will remain loyal if you offer them exclusivity amidst the ordinary.

I had just a few thoughts on business and branding while I reviewed Kate Spade's latest clothing and jewelry (below). There are stripes involved, so clearly that is what got my attention.

Cute. I love stripes.

Kate Spade striped dress. Everyone needs one like this. Don't listen regarding the whole horizontal stripe theory. Just avoid looking like a bumble bee in wide, bi-color-equal width stripes (unless you are playing rugby).

Kate Spade "Bamboozled" Necklace. I love bamboo anything, this looks vintage. Another piece of the puzzle when keeping things "exclusive". Vintage means no one else can find this...and consumers like that concept.

Bolero

Is it a coincidence that I am listening to Ravel's "Bolero" as performed by the London Symphony Orchestra (a favorite, second only to the Cleveland Symphony!) that I would be inspired to do my post on these gorgeous collections of bracelets as worn by ladies in Madrid? My mother always wore a cacophony of bangles in different metals and shapes. There were usually some of the same bangles used consistently which helped me to identify her in adjacent grocery store aisles or when she made hand gestures while talking on the telephone. I love bracelets. I do not design many of them in my jewelry line, Sugar. But for some reason, I collect them to no deafening end. (Bolero is nearing it's crescendo, as I think of my mounting collection of assorted wrist adornments...)

Fantastic skirt, excellent with her bangle choices. This makes me want to buy some espadrilles and travel.

These two women from Madrid (above and below) have a wonderful sense of how to arrange and confidently wear a collection of bangles. Assert yourselves this summer, as with other style inspiration. If I weren't working today I would dart into my room and pile some on myself. Maybe I can later for an eventful late afternoon at Trader Joe's... What event is more important than daily life?

I guess my style and overall direction is a little scattered. Two days ago I wrote about brights and prints, and the virtues of wearing vintage Lilly.

Today I want to share my love of this lace mask, or is it the concept of the lace mask that the photo is selling to us? The mask is enhanced by the beauty of this photo (Tommy Ton) and the simplicity of her look (chignon, small stud earring, simple neckline)...

Some days complicated is nice, and some days simple is revered.

Summer Clothes

Somehow I am not sure that most areas of the U.S. would see it as acceptable to wander into appointments and grocery stores dressed out in bright prints and vintage Lilly maxi dresses. I don't think I want to live in those places where people would think it odd. I live in one now. All that means is that I have to re-harness my style confidence and wear the things that make me happy.

Jules Reid summer caftan dress.

My partner in crime, Vieve, and I saw Jules Reid's little booth at Coterie a few years back. Her prices are borderline poolside couture (over $1,000 for the caftan shown above). Her execution is great, the fabrics and designs are wonderfully reminiscent of Palm Beach Lilly meets Capri in 1969.

Like the other designers whose price tags leave me to my imagination, so does Jules Reid. That kiwi printed caftan makes me want to dust off my pink and white Lilly dress from the early 70s that I snagged at a vintage store in Hudson, Ohio. The pants (below) make me long to find a tailor who can whip up some flare legs for me out of dangerous ikat.

The lesson here (for me) is to be bold and inspired. I need to rediscover some of the treats lurking in my closet and make everyday a little more showstopping - for me more than anyone else.

Something to Fill the Green Void

It should come as no surprise that I have another entry regarding something striped.

If you cannot find an available zebra to adorn your out-of-doors, may I suggest Z Gallerie's striped pavilion? This piece is quite wonderful poolside (three of them would be incredible - mockingly reminiscent of cabanas) or sitting obviously in your green grass. Ah! What an enormously perfect accessory for a croquet lawn!

These lanterns with the pavilion would be overkill, but are perfect as a dash of striped fantasia bobbing from your tree limbs. Especially because they are more in the range of an impulse buy than the pavilion.

Although who can live one more day staring at their empty span of lawn? An investment, I say. Your friends and family will reminisce someday about those stripes, that pavilion, those cocktails...

May 22, 2011 An Exercise in Perfection

I got married Sunday, May 22 in Yemassee, South Carolina. It was perfect.

Old Sheldon Church ruins in Yemassee, South Carolina

Scott and I got married at the Old Sheldon Church (above) which was built in 1745-55, and consequently burned down by the British soldiers in the Revolutionary War - rebuilt - and burned again by Union soldiers in the Civil War. The church was not rebuilt after that, but since then the ruins have been used for services and weddings.

It is an amazing and peaceful place and majestic in its presence. The live oak trees are bent and crippled with hanging moss, and ferns and seedlings are growing from the bricks. It is magical. And in the middle of nowhere...

The River Club at Oldfield 1732 plantation.

Our reception was held at Oldfield 1732, a residential plantation with several clubhouses, a rambling golf course, and incredible "Low Country" style homes. Oldfield is nothing short of a moment in time where everything was simpler, slower, and made more sense. Our families and friends stayed in cottages throughout the property. It is a totally gated and secured environment, so the kids were able to ride their bikes to mini adventures that I remember creating when I was younger.

I cannot say enough about my weekend and especially about my wedding day. It was perfect in every way and I am pretty sure those of you who were able to join us feel the same way. Thank you for your love and adoration - as well as your support and presence. It means the world to us.

I hesitate to comment too much on this dress below for I feel it may reveal more about a special little dress that I am keeping hidden until the end of May...that would be my wedding dress.

What I can say about this dress below is that if I didn't already find my vintage off-white short wedding dress (that's all he knows thus far) I would call Bergdorf's right now and have the dress below sent to me. Who wouldn't want to be married in a confectionary piece of McQueen Fashion?

I do not think it is meant to be a wedding dress, but in my opinion the best wedding dresses are not designed for that purpose. Stay creative.

I would be happy to lobby for assembling a posse in that Burberry trench coat and some Louboutin python platforms.

The 70s were genius. Was everyone so consumed with looking chic and partying (and you know I mean partying as in total disregard for one's health and safety, really just slopping it all on) in sequins that there was nothing else happening in the world? I think so, and it was brilliant! The only way to transport yourself there is with a little disco, amber lighting, and fantastic design. To think that when I was seven I thought the 70s were so passe - it was 1982. I love the 80s, too, for entirely different reasons.

It is a Toyota Celica made entirely of rattan, handworked by artisans in the Phillippines and designed by Rita McBride. The detail is incredible and the skill to build this is impressive.

The MCASD has free admission for students 25 and under which is a great program, and they have a small but perfectly placed set of gallieries in La Jolla overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

I Heart Cakestands

There is a store on Abbot Kinney Blvd that my friend Geoffrey Nichols walks past with his precious black pug called Pixie. It is almost offensive to call Pixie just a "black pug" because she is so much more.

I digress. Geoffrey and his sister Ali are the BEST at noticing artistic and chic details no matter where they are. And I LOVE that both of them send me images that make them happy, or wonder (in this case with the cakestands), or jealous (as with the green BMW 2000 in an older post).

Apparently this shop changes their window display of stacked colorful cakestands often. First, they have enough cakestands to even create this installation once. Second, they have so many different and brilliant cakestands that they can change the installation often! I am not sure how often this cakestands are rearranged, but Geoffrey has assured me he will continue his updates on this window display.

I am going to make this cakestand matrix one of my destinations next time I am in LA. I love random, incredible, thought provoking, eccentric, colorful, interesting effort. And I love cakestands.

I admired Debbie Harry's style for years before I could pinpoint the definition of "style". Looking back during those experimental style years called "under 25" I should have bleached my hair at least once. And if the internet had existed, I would have feverishly collected images of my style icons - Debbie Harry being one of my favorites. Instead of Google Images I had grainy MTV and the video noir "Heart of Glass" played at will by the VJ's showcasing Her frazzled bleached bob and red lips. A true icon of feminine punk rock sexy style.

Is it too late to bleach my hair into a punk rock frizz? I think I am lamenting my "under 25", and more recently my "under 35".

My lovely friend, AHN, introduced me to this quiet curated place. Once again she has redirected my attention to the seventh floor where these incredible "Prickly Pear" chairs are featured by designer Valentina Gonzalez Wholers. There are almost no words, except "I want two for my dining room".

Hailing most recently from a marine laden town with stories of mermaids and tritons and sailors from 'round the planet, I have a particular attachment to the intrigue and romance of these words. This Jacket, These Doors, This Hotel

Let's start with the jacket. It's perfect. What a good color. Of course if we are going to talk details, it could fit a little tighter in order to avoid looking like a fuddy. My Grandfather had a jacket like this except it was corduroy (genius) - and he had a matching one made for my Grandmother. Why don't people dress like that anymore?

This was taken at the main entrance of the Parker Palm Springs. An incredibly styled hotel done by Jonathan Adler. There are so many incredible ideas and detials in this space it's amazing and worth a stay over in Palm Springs...or just a cocktail at their green marble and mirrored lobby bar. Yep. Green marble + brass + mirrors. Now THAT is where you drink a proper cocktail, at the proper hour, in this proper pink blazer.

This gift guide is dedicated to the people who have to shop for the people who have everything, or the folks who enjoy a dash of whimsy, or just simply to rival the usually impressive Neiman Marcus Christmas Catalog. So this is what the world has come to...

Bagel Bites at Nino's Pizza, St. Mark's Place

A few weeks ago I found myself at Nino's Pizza on the corner of St. Mark's in the Lower East Side. This street alone, an icon within an iconic city, is a bastion of excess and wild style. I hope that what I found at Nino's is not a symbol of the apathy that is quietly seeping into the corners of the Greatest City in the World.

Because now, a relatively decent by-the-slice NY pizzeria, has slumped to buying, cooking, and selling 6-for-$4 Ore Ida brand Bagel Bites. Yep. I cannot make this up. The rather proud red t-shirt wearing pizza jockey behind the glass touted "6-for-$4!" when I remarked about the mere presence of the Bagel Bites in the front row. He even offered to smile widely and get into the picture. It's not that he didn't admit they were Bagel Bites. He did. He thought they were a smart addition to the line up.

For his own pride, which he will lose at a later date when he realizes the offense he has committed, I have omitted him from the photo. It is straight up NOT OK to sell Bagel Bites in a pizzeria, anywhere, especially New York. People here are not supposed to kowtow and give up like this.

If it's any sign of hope, the line at Grimaldi's in Brooklyn is still long and the pizza is still worth waiting for...

Filling a French Cuffed Void (How Civilized, and In Time for the Holidays)

I adore an intimate accessory and touch of whimsy that only I know is there. It gives me a dash of confidence in knowing I have a secret, and sometimes only the most observant and deserving people will notice. Maybe that's why I am so into details. I love details and even rewatch movie scenes for hidden lines and background images (a favorite background image is one of the 80's high school dance attendees in the background of a Sixteen Candles scene...).

Cufflinks are a wonderful way for a man who is conscious of details already since he has even bothered to wear a French cuff shirt, to express his sense of comedy and style. Take note of some of these amazing sets.

Check out Etsy.com for some incredible cufflinks, as well as local vintage and thrift stores. The Missing Link on 25th Street in NYC is a mecca for cufflink collectors.

This is a gorgeous photo of a billowing red coat made more interesting by the contrast of green - that happens to be a trash bag. What's interesting is that we would not knowingly include a dangling trash bag in the photo - we would consciously crop it out. It is the heavily hanging bag that gives this photo some oomph, in my opinion, of course.

This Rick Owens shearling jacket is PERFECTION. I covet most everything that he designs, especially his leather jackets. And then he takes it one step further into shearling territory? The picture is a little small, but there is gorgeous detail on the sleeves as well.

Rick Owens' wife, Michelle Lamy, is his muse and collaborator. They are just too cool. I wonder how they celebrate anniversaries? Are they popping corks of rose colored champagne?

oooh, a PINK Rick Owens jacket would be amazing, and would also never ever happen. I am sure you can see that this couple is not exactly pink-thinking.

I don't know if this dog really gets money out of the ATM for it's person, but regardless, it is pretty impressive. Dixie (my yellow lab) has always tried to show me, usually without witnesses, that she does not need thumbs (to get into mischief).

The above photo is what happens when you properly channel the intelligence and mischieviousness of an adorable friend. Maybe donating to a Leader Dog foundation is a nice thing to do for the holidays?

I love the pink foyer. That is a pink foyer. And it has zebra. And blue and white vases. Did I point out the gold bamboo mirror??? I almost forgot the tufted pink chairs.

The room below needs no explination (neither does the pink foyer, really) - it has striped walls. Not just any striped walls. A picture says a thousand words...

I visited the new Barney's Co-op that opened on Atlantic Avenue the day it opened, October 14. There were treats and a Pellegrino bar. Delicious giant gauzy scarves, Marc by Marc bags, Alexander Wang and Opening Ceremony for miles, well yards and yards. And no shoes.

I was so excited about the idea of a Barney's on Atlantic! Just four blocks from my house, and flanked by a massive Trader Joe's and a shop that sells curry, almonds, and improved How To Bellydance videos (I cannot make this up)... But no shoes? I think this was a major oversight by Barney's.

Maybe they will remove some of the massive quantities of denim from the basement and create a little shoe department. Without shoes, this Co-op is a Designer 7-11.

Necklace or Breastplace?

This necklace is incredible. Vintage, of course. Tom Binns, you do nice pieces, but this thing is a real stunner. Of course it is already sold to some lucky person. I hope she is wearing it with pride. That's a nice trophy.
